Movie Grades 4Q 2009

Addictions to Mad Men and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia kept me from seeing as many movies this quarter as I normally might:

A-

Up In the Air – I’ve seen this movie three times now. Definitely one of my favorite releases of the year.

Man on Wire – Beautiful, inspiring documentary about the man who walked on a wire between the World Trade Center towers. See it.

This Is It – I got lost in this movie. Nothing else mattered for two hours while watching one of the best entertainers of all-time do what he did best. Awesome!

B+

Heat – Above average good guy vs. bad guy action flick where you don’t know who to root for.

Avatar – I wasn’t like wild about the storyline, but the visuals on 3-D IMAX were unreal. Easily the prettiest movie I’ve seen.

B

The Escapist – Pretty cool prison break movie set in England.

B-

Point Break – Has some memorable lines (”back off, warchild!”) but was otherwise pretty meh.

Léon – For being #35 on IMDB’s top 250, this was a complete disappointment.

Brothers – The movie itself had its flaws, but the acting was tremendous, especially Tobey McGuire I thought.

D

The Other Man – The story of a husband who suspects his wife of adultery, and sets out to track down the other man in her life. You would think it’d be pretty good, right? But you would think wrong.

Good Night and Good Luck – Never seen a movie so far up its own ass.

The Box – Kind of a bummer to see one of the coolest thought experiments drug around like a cheap hooker in the name of a few lame thrills.
