Puerto Rico

I’ve been in San Juan, Puerto Rico for the last several nights with a buddy of mine for vacation. This place kind of reminds me of Vegas only not nearly as big and with a beach. Most of the hotels have casinos which all have been quite a bit larger than I would have guessed.

On Saturday night, we went to a pretty big Halloween party at a neighboring hotel where we were pretty much the only people not in costume. Surprisingly, no one seemed to care since it was never brought up.

My friend is a huge Phillies fan (he’s from Philadelphia), so quite a few of our nights have consisted of finding a cool bar to watch the World Series game. It’s amazing how many people here are from the Northeast. We’ve met a ton of people from New York and Jersey who are rooting for the Yankees. Plus most of the locals seem to like the Yankees (it seems like every Puerto Rican has lived in New York at some point), so every bar we’ve been to erupts when they score whereas we’re pretty much the only ones rooting for the Phillies.

The blackjack action here has been ridiculously brutal. I’m about as non-superstitious of a person as you can be, but we’ve been running so cold even I’m beginning to have my doubts as to the integrity of the deck. Never seen so many 20s against the dealer’s 4 where they flipped over a 7 and of course found a face card to bust us. We’re pretty jaded right now. I haven’t even touched the poker tables except for an $80 tournament we played one night that sucked because there were no antes. The only cash game that runs is a $2/$5 no-limit game where most people seemed to buy-in for $200 or less. I just haven’t had the drive to sit down in that game and for me, playing poker when you don’t want to be there is usually a bad idea.

I haven’t taken many pictures; I left my camera at home and my iPhone has been acting real buggy all trip, so I’ve left it in the room most of the time. But here are a couple shots I took earlier in the week:

The sign on that building in the second picture says “Cockfighting”. Apparently that’s legal here. We played blackjack with this one guy who said he was going to take his family there (like, little kids) the next day. That seemed like questionable judgment to me, but I didn’t think any benefit would come from wearing him out about it.

Alright, time to shower and go root for the Phillies in Game 6. I have this feeling Pedro is going to throw 6 innings of 2-hit, 1-run baseball to help force a Game 7!
